Oroslan
“Anybody can be a story,” said in an interview director Matjaž Ivanišin, and his film “Oroslan” is the discreet, but convincing proof that this principle is true. Based on a fictional source – a short story by Zdravko Duša – and a real place – a Hungarian village inhabited by a Slovenian minority – the filmmaker weaves together staged dialogues with stories experienced by the villagers in order to paint the portrait of Oroslan, a recently deceased member of the community. By all appearances, he was a simple man, and yet the figure that emerges from the fragmented narratives is multifaceted, shifting and evanescent. As brother, friend, neighbour, accidental acquaintance and the village drunk, Oroslan’s character is somewhere between a flesh and bone person, an archetype and a conceptual construct meant to confirm the director’s humanist credo.
